Sweet Decay Fragrance Oil

$4.75 – $40.00

Delightfully twisted A collision of deep earth and glossy cherry that seems slightly oxymoronic. It shouldn’t work, but it does. Cherry notes in this scent spike the gloom of the dark woods and fallen leaves notes. The result is moody, sinister, and just sweet enough to give you a toothache. Its the ultimate candy rot vibe for Halloween.

Sweet Decay Fragrance Oil

What it smells like and what it does in a base

Glossy black cherry over damp earth and fallen leaves. On paper it should not work — bright candy fruit sitting on a mossy, ambery floor is a collision, not a blend — but the cherry is what keeps the dark half from going grim, and the earth is what stops the cherry from reading as cough syrup. It is the only gourmand in this collection, and the easiest sell to a customer who wants something seasonal without wanting something gothic.

Cherry is the note to plan around. Cherry accords are among the more volatile things to formulate with — they can fade faster than the base they sit on, and they commonly morph at high pH, which is very likely why this one is rated not suitable for cold process soap. In leave-on and melt-and-pour it holds. At ~5% vanillin expect a white base to warm over months.

Formulator's shorthand: the commercial one. If you are building a Halloween line and need a single product that sells to someone who does not want to smell like a graveyard, this is it.

Midnight Botanica

Eight scents from a garden that only opens after dark — heavy florals, damp earth, and the things that grow over stone. Sweet Decay is the fruit gone over: the one sweet thing in the set, and the brightest entry point.

Behavior in base

The four things that go wrong, and whether they will here

Discoloration Expected — gradual ~5% vanillin. A white base warms over months. Use a Vanilla Stabilizer, or lean in with a red, amber or black base — the theme suits it.
Flashpoint 200 °F / 93 °C High. Melt & pour poured at 140 °F leaves a wide margin. Still add as late as you can — the cherry lives in the top notes.
Cold process soap Not suitable Tested and ruled out. Cherry accords commonly morph or vanish at high pH, which is the usual reason. Melt & pour is unaffected.
Candles & wax Not suitable Formulated for skin, not wax. No burn testing performed.

How much to use

Two different limits apply. Always use the lower one.

Start here — your base sets the rate 0.3% to 5% That is the entire range across all 86 of our bases, and 40 of them cap at 1%. How much fragrance a product can carry is decided by the base, not by the oil. This is the number you formulate to. See every base and its load →
The legal ceiling — not a target Certificate pending This fragrance is new to the line and its IFRA certificate is still being finalised. We are not publishing figures until it is issued — a ceiling we cannot certify is worse than no number at all.

Category maxima across our 86 bases. Facial and tear-free versions sit lower than the body version of the same base, and five of our sulfate-free bases specify a different load for vanillin-containing fragrances. Always take the figure from the base product page you are actually using, or see the full reference table.

Need limits before it is published? Email hello@essentialsbycatalina.com and we will send the current figures from our supplier's documentation. Please do not carry over the limits from another oil in this collection — they vary widely between fragrances, and two oils that smell related can certify very differently.

Pure & undiluted

Why our oils behave differently from most

Many suppliers sell fragrance oils cut with carrier oils or diluents to reduce cost. Ours are concentrated, pure, undiluted and cosmetic grade. A concentrated oil means a lower fragrance load per batch — a little goes a long way, and your cost per unit drops even when the per-ounce price does not.

Product compatibility is not the responsibility of Essentials By Catalina, Inc. We strongly advise sampling before committing to larger quantities so you can evaluate performance, compatibility and safety in your own formulation. Keep all products out of children's reach.
