Dark Romance Fragrance Oil

$5.75 – $44.00

Concealed beneath a black veil, this intoxicating blend of sharp geranium and warm spices demands blind devotion. The amber and musk give it an unyielding depth that lingers. Its broody, intense and scheming. Anyone who likes this fragrance may have a dark side.

Dark Romance Fragrance Oil

What it smells like and what it does in a base

The most complex build in this collection — ten materials against the three or four the others run on — and it opens somewhere unexpected. Clove, nutmeg and bergamot sit in the top notes rather than the base, so the first impression is sharp and cool rather than warm. Sharp geranium runs underneath, green and faintly metallic, and it is what stops the honeysuckle and gardenia from turning sweet. Amber and sandalwood hold the bottom and outlast everything above them.

At 0.4% vanillin this is the only oil in the collection that is genuinely safe in a true white base. The others run around 5% and need a stabilizer or a tinted base. This one does not — a white lotion stays white. Combined with a 200 °F flashpoint and the widest note spread in the set, it is the most flexible thing here.

Formulator's shorthand: the workhorse of the collection, with one caveat — its IFRA ceilings are the tightest here, so check the usage section rather than assuming. Complex enough to carry a product on its own, almost no discoloration risk, and the one to reach for when the base has to stay pale but the scent still has to feel dark.

Midnight Botanica

Eight scents from a garden that only opens after dark — heavy florals, damp earth, and the things that grow over stone. Dark Romance is the one wearing a veil: sharp spice over heavy florals, with amber and sandalwood underneath.

Behavior in base

The four things that go wrong, and whether they will here

Discoloration Negligible 0.4% vanillin, the lowest in the collection by a wide margin. A white base holds true. A stabilizer is unnecessary here.
Flashpoint 200 °F / 93 °C High. Melt & pour poured at 140 °F leaves a wide margin. Add late anyway so the bergamot survives.
Cold process soap Not specified Not tested for acceleration or discoloration at high pH. Clove and cinnamon materials can accelerate trace — test a small batch first.
Candles & wax Not specified Formulated for skin, not wax. No burn testing performed.

How much to use

Two different limits apply. Always use the lower one.

Start here — your base sets the rate 0.3% to 5% That is the entire range across all 86 of our bases, and 40 of them cap at 1%. How much fragrance a product can carry is decided by the base, not by the oil. This is the number you formulate to. See every base and its load →
The legal ceiling — unusually close here IFRA maximum Read this one carefully. The clove and cinnamon in this build carry their own IFRA restrictions, so its ceilings are the tightest in the collection — 1.5% in a body lotion, 0.5% in eye and facial products. On most oils the base runs out long before IFRA does. On this one they are close, so check both.

Pure & undiluted

Why our oils behave differently from most

Many suppliers sell fragrance oils cut with carrier oils or diluents to reduce cost. Ours are concentrated, pure, undiluted and cosmetic grade. A concentrated oil means a lower fragrance load per batch — a little goes a long way, and your cost per unit drops even when the per-ounce price does not.

Product compatibility is not the responsibility of Essentials By Catalina, Inc. We strongly advise sampling before committing to larger quantities so you can evaluate performance, compatibility and safety in your own formulation. Keep all products out of children's reach.
