Cast a Spell Fragrance Oil

What it smells like and what it does in a base

A chypre in the proper sense: bergamot and citrus at the top, mossy and animalic depth underneath, patchouli holding the middle. Pine and clove push it out of the classic perfume shape and into a forest — wet needles, cold air, resin on the hands. Violets and heliotrope keep it from going harsh, which is what stops thirteen materials from turning into mud.

This is the only oil in Midnight Botanica rated for cold process soap. If you make CP and want a scent from this collection, this is the one — the rest are either ruled out or untested. It also runs 0.05% vanillin, effectively nothing, so a white base stays white with no stabilizer.

It is also certified across nearly every IFRA class, which makes it unusually flexible on paper. Those are safety ceilings rather than use rates, though — the amount you actually add is set by the base you are working in.

Formulator's shorthand: the most broadly usable oil in the collection by a wide margin. CP-safe, colour-stable, and permitted in nearly every application — then dosed at whatever the base calls for.

Midnight Botanica

Eight scents from a garden that only opens after dark — heavy florals, damp earth, and the things that grow over stone. Cast a Spell is the forest beyond the wall, and the most flexible oil in the set.

Behavior in base

The four things that go wrong, and whether they will here

Discoloration Negligible 0.05% vanillin — effectively none. A white base holds true and no stabilizer is needed.
Flashpoint 200 °F / 93 °C High. Melt & pour poured at 140 °F leaves a wide margin. Add late so the bergamot and pine survive.
Cold process soap Tested and approved The only oil in this collection rated True for CP. Certified to 15% in Class 9, which covers bar and liquid soap.
Candles & wax Not specified IFRA places no restriction on non-skin use, but that is a safety ceiling, not a performance rating. We have not burn-tested this oil.

How much to use

Two different limits apply. Always use the lower one.

Start here — your base sets the rate 0.3% to 5% That is the entire range across all 86 of our bases, and 40 of them cap at 1%. How much fragrance a product can carry is decided by the base, not by the oil. This is the number you formulate to. See every base and its load →
The legal ceiling — not a target IFRA maximum The figures below are the highest concentration IFRA permits for skin safety. They are a limit you must not exceed, not an amount to aim for. In almost every product the base will run out of capacity long before the IFRA ceiling is reached.
Base categoryFragrance load
Body Sprays & Mistsup to 1%
  — Body Spray Baseup to 5%
Salts, Fizzies & Bath Bombsup to 2%
Body Scrubs & Polishesup to 2%
Body Washes & Bubble Bathsup to 1%

Hair Careup to 1%
Body Oilsup to 1%
Melt & Pour Soap0.3–1%
Men's Personal Care0.5–1%
Facial Formulations0.3–0.6%

Category maxima across our 86 bases. Facial and tear-free versions sit lower than the body version of the same base, and five of our sulfate-free bases specify a different load for vanillin-containing fragrances. Always take the figure from the base product page you are actually using, or see the full reference table.

IFRA regulatory ceilings, all 11 classes (certificate FO2596)

Pure & undiluted

Why our oils behave differently from most

Many suppliers sell fragrance oils cut with carrier oils or diluents to reduce cost. Ours are concentrated, pure, undiluted and cosmetic grade. A concentrated oil means a lower fragrance load per batch — a little goes a long way, and your cost per unit drops even when the per-ounce price does not.

Product compatibility is not the responsibility of Essentials By Catalina, Inc. We strongly advise sampling before committing to larger quantities so you can evaluate performance, compatibility and safety in your own formulation. Keep all products out of children's reach.
