Salted Kettle Corn Fragrance Oil

What it smells like and what it does in a base

Forget the movie theatre. This is a cast iron kettle over heat — corn popping in melted butter, sugar caramelising on the outside of it, and a hard hit of sea salt over the top. Rich, salty and sweet all at once, and more addictive than it has any right to be.

For the formulator this is the one to read the numbers on before you plan anything. It is the most restricted oil in the collection: IFRA caps it at 0.400% across every skin category, which is below the allowance of nearly every base we sell. It is also not suitable for cold process soap. Vanillin is low at 1.6%, so colour is not your problem here — headroom is.

Formulator's shorthand: low dose, high impact. Build to 0.400% and skip cold process. Within that envelope it is one of the most distinctive scents in the set.

Guilty Pleasures

A fall and winter collection with no pumpkin, no spiced leaf and no cider stand — built on sugar, dairy and fried dough instead. Salted Kettle Corn is the savoury corner of it: the only one with real salt in the profile, and the one with the least room to move.

Tagged for a child audience as well as unisex. That is a marketing descriptor rather than a safety clearance — the 0.400% ceiling below applies regardless of who the product is for, and Class 3 covers baby creams and lotions at that same figure.

Behavior in base

The four things that go wrong, and whether they will here

Discoloration Slight 1.6% vanillin. Low enough that a white base drifts only a little over a long shelf life. Of the four lowest-vanillin oils here this is the one most likely to be used at full ceiling, and 0.400% of anything moves very little colour.
Flashpoint 200 °F / 93 °C High, with a comfortable margin. No constraint on melt and pour or on a warm lotion phase.
Cold process soap Not suitable Tested and not cleared. Do not put this in a CP batch — the caramel and nut materials do not survive the high pH and the result is thin and off. Use melt and pour instead.
Candles & wax Not rated No burn testing performed. Class 11 on the certificate allows 20%, which is a legal ceiling for non-skin use rather than evidence that it burns well.

How much to use

Two different limits apply. Always use the lower one.

Start here — your base sets the rate 0.3% to 5% That is the entire range across all 86 of our bases, and 40 of them cap at 1%. How much fragrance a product can carry is decided by the base, not by the oil. On this oil, unusually, it is not — read the next panel. See every base and its load →
The legal ceiling — not a target 0.400% Certified under the 48th Amendment, which uses Classes 1–11 rather than the Categories you will see on newer certificates. Classes 1 through 10 are all capped at 0.400%. That is lower than every base allowance we publish, so on this oil IFRA is the binding limit everywhere that touches skin.

Category maxima across our 86 bases. Facial and tear-free versions sit lower than the body version of the same base, and five of our sulfate-free bases specify a different load for vanillin-containing fragrances — which this is. Always take the figure from the base product page you are actually using, or see the full reference table.

IFRA is the binding limit on this oil, not the base. Every skin product type caps at 0.400%. Our lotion bases allow 1%, scrubs and bath bombs 2%, and the Body Spray Base 5% — you cannot use any of that headroom. Formulate to 0.400% and expect a lighter throw than the same base gives with other oils in this collection.
Not suitable for cold process soap. This is the only oil in the collection that fails CP. Use melt and pour instead.

Certified by Essentials by Catalina, Inc. under the 48th Amendment of the IFRA safety guidelines. The 48th uses eleven numbered classes; the 51st Amendment splits several of them into 5A–5D, 7A/7B, 10A/10B and 11A/11B and adds Category 12 for candles. Figures do not map one-to-one between the two, so do not compare this table against a 51st Amendment certificate row by row.

Pure & undiluted

Why our oils behave differently from most

Many suppliers sell fragrance oils cut with carrier oils or diluents to reduce cost. Ours are concentrated, pure, undiluted and cosmetic grade. A concentrated oil means a lower fragrance load per batch — a little goes a long way, and your cost per unit drops even when the per-ounce price does not.

Product compatibility is not the responsibility of Essentials By Catalina, Inc. We strongly advise sampling before committing to larger quantities so you can evaluate performance, compatibility and safety in your own formulation. Keep all products out of children's reach.
