Soothing After Sun Gel Recipe With A Glowing Finish
Summer is here, and so is the heat. Here is a soothing after sun gel recipe to cool the skin and give a glowing finish. This recipe features niacinamide, oatmeal extract, and a touch of peppermint in our Aloe Gel Base to soothe and give a cooling, hydrating boost to sun-soaked skin. This lightweight formula can be used under sunscreen and other water-based moisturizers.
Using our Aloe Gel Base as the foundation fast-tracks product development with a tried and true formula. You can customize this recipe in so many ways, like adding a mica or excluding the peppermint. You can add any water-soluble ingredients to make it more custom to your brand.
I came up with this recipe to be a facial formula, but it can be stripped down for an all-over body product.

Benefits of Niacinamide for After Sun Gel Care
Everyone knows the hot feeling on the surface of the skin after being in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Even with sunscreen, the skin can be left feeling stressed. It essentially is irritation and inflammation caused by the sun’s rays. This causes the skin to turn red and even have the sensation of heat.
This recipe includes 2% niacinamide that teams up with the cooling sensation of the aloe gel base to create a soothing effect on the skin. Not only will this gel feel like a cool drink for the skin, but it can reduce the redness and inflammation brought on by sun exposure. Niacinamide hinders the production of pro-inflammatory signaling molecules (cytokines) in the skin. It also helps reduce inflammation by interfering with the NF-KB pathway, which triggers the production of inflammatory substances in the skin.
This does not mean you can skip out on using sunscreen. Niacinamide should be used alongside SPF, not as a replacement.
Benefits of Oatmeal Extract for After Sun Care
Using botanical extracts is a great way to incorporate the isolated beneficial constituents into your formula without undesirable byproducts. Using Oatmeal extract in this recipe will have all the soothing benefits without clouding up the Aloe Gel Base. Oatmeal extract is great for after-sun care because it is rich in polyphenols. Which reduces inflammation in the skin.
Benefits of Aloe Vera Gel for After Sun Care
Even with the use of sunscreen, the skin can still have a heated sensation. Sure, you can splash your face with cold water, and it will feel nice. Using aloe vera for after sun care not only feels like a tall glass of cold water for the skin, but it has anti-inflammatory properties. Emmit the peppermint oil in this recipe for more sensitive skin types.
The Glowing Finish
This Recipe has a glowing finish that leaves the skin looking dewy and smooth. It can be used right after coming in from being in the sun and before applying another layer of sunscreen. It can even be used as an evening moisturizer to lock in hydration after a night shower. You can even add a very fine mica powder for an extra glowy finish.
This is a water-based formula that can be layered beautifully with other water-based products like sunscreen and makeup. However, it does not mix well with Isododecane and dimethicone-based products.
I tested this recipe under a water-based sunscreen and foundation; the result was a smooth, even finish. Then I tried it under two different Isododecane and Dimethicone-based sunscreens. The result was the formulas repelling each other, and “pill” or having a film rolling around on my face that looked like dried glue. One sunscreen was a drugstore brand, and the other was a high-end brand. Just a little note for your customers.
