What is Mineral Oil?
There is so much negative stigma surrounding this ingredient that many consumers want nothing to do with it. The problem is, not many people really know what it is or what it is used for in cosmetic formulations. Mineral oil is a purified oil produced from distilling petroleum. Used in cosmetics, its main purpose is as an emollient.
Is it safe?
Generally, YES! It is distilled and purified just like any other oil. Mineral oil is said to be a mild non sensitizing. That is why it is used in many personal care products. For example, if you didn’t know already, it is what baby oil is made out of. That’s right, most of us have either used baby oil or your parents used it on you. A major concern people have about this oil is that it could be contaminated. Well that goes for any oil, It could be an all natural organic oil and could still be contaminated. As long as it is from a reliable source there should be no issues with contamination. Which is why we source and use only Mineral Oil that comes from the most reliable sources and is of the highest quality and purity.
Mineral Oil molecules are too big to penetrate the skin. So the oil sitting on the skin may cause acne, that’s why mineral oil is best used in products that don’t go on such prone areas. Products that go on the soles of feet are probably best suited for this emollient. Although there are no infused benefits to this oil, it’s sole purpose is to lock in moisture.
This is a good oil because it is inexpensive and readily available. Another bonus of mineral oil is it shouldn’t go rancid like other oils.
